The YMCA is one of the world's largest volunteer organizations. The YMCA of Northern Alberta alone relies on 600-800 volunteers a year giving 25,000-30,000 hours.
Every year our YMCA recognizes outstanding volunteer achievements with the YMCA Volunteer Awards, named in honour of Bill Rees. Bill has been a YMCA member and volunteer for the last 50 years. For over 20 years, Bill has been a full-time volunteer with the YMCA of Northern Alberta, working in fundraising and relationship development.
Congratulations to the 2013 Bill Rees Volunteer Award Recipients!

- Ami Singh, Storyteller & Financial Development Volunteer
A YMCA volunteer since 2010, Ami Singh has contributed over 100 hours of volunteer work, helping to raise funds for the YMCA Welcome Village Capital Campaign. She has worked closely with the YMCA Relationship Development Team in connecting her colleagues in the medical community, forging new and lasting relationships.
- Barbara Savoia, Spirit Volunteer
Generous to a fault, Barbara Savoia embodies the very soul of the YMCA. She has kindly prepared and cooked countless meals for staff, committee and board members since 2000. She exemplifies the spirit of giving through her caring, honesty, and selflessness.
- Doug Schindel, Policy Volunteer
Over the past eight years, Doug Schindel has been an outstanding leader, serving as a board volunteer. Doug played a pivotal role in the opening of the successful YMCA Welcome Village, a task that involved numerous commitments over and above the responsibilities of the board chair.
- Dr. John Lilley, Volunteer of the Year
John Lilley has been a YMCA volunteer since 1999. Since then, he's served as the board chair, the chair for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, and most recently the chair for the YMCA Welcome Village Capital Campaign. A community leader passionate about philanthropy, John reached out to his colleagues in the medical community, educating them on the YMCA's impact and inviting them to give generously to the YMCA Welcome Village. Thanks to his vision and energy, the Welcome Village Campaign surpassed its original goal of $3.3 million by $1 million.
- Steve Gray, Program Volunteer
Steve's dedication to the YMCA is an inspiration to staff, members, and volunteers. He donates 10 or more hours every week at the William Lutsky Family YMCA, helping out where ever he can. Steve's knowledge, warmth, and enthusiasm are an incredible asset for the William Lutsky YMCA.
- Victor Do, Youth Volunteer
Victor has been volunteering in the YMCA International Program, spreading awareness of international themes and issues to members. He also volunteers at the Jamie Platz Family YMCA, where he has demonstrated leadership and creativity in developing a homework club for elementary-aged children.
